Frosty closed field

Well today the weather man had forecasted warmer temps. However it’s meant to be warmer later in the day more like close to 12 hours after we got up to do our workout.

So, we lugged our rucks and a sandbag(sb) to our destination 1/2 a mile away. Our warmup was mostly indoors and plain old mobility for what was to happen at the field.

We lugged our gear over to the field and began our WOD on a frosted field. One person decided to wear shorts this morning with temps at 34F/1.11C. I am not keen on putting my bare knee on icy ground and neither was he so lunges were hovered above ground for him but not for the rest.

Breathing began to be a tad labored and thereafter we cleaned and tossed sb for distance covering the area we just lunge walked with sb. Now it’s getting a little interesting since i couldn’t find my light sweater for the WOD, and began with my puffy since the temp was lower leaving the house I thought it’d be ok to do the WOD with it.

Ummm, Nope! I was overheating on the lunge walk, and good thing I wore my Icebreaker’s long sleeve wool shirt and it was just fine. The only draw back is that it didn’t help me breathe better. I’m fighting a small sinus infection and chest congestion, but the sinuses began to drain really good so I’m breathing better now as I write this.

Every once in a while when programming in my minds eye I see the workout(s) line of progression from beginning to end, and view the logistics and transitions. They look great on paper and I say to myself ‘this one is gonna be okay’. Not too bad unless your in the mix doing it.

After the clean and toss it’s time for the trusted bear crawl sb drag. Yes! Your flexors and shoulders will totally LOVE ❤️ you! Trust me. Then it’s off to the 8-count body builders and it shows that many people love just diving down and flopping all over the place to do the burpee. Well with the body builder you have to really slow it down to use proper form on the push up. Strength and endurance kids. It pays off.

Once you think it can not get slower (meaning your momentum) we do step ups with sb, and then lay down for leg levers.

All of the work is completed wearing the rucksack except the leg levers where you hold your ruck in front of you with arms fully extended in a supine position bringing both legs to touch ruck with feet or shins while keeping legs straight for the entire rep to count. As you can imagine – it HURTS! Feel da burrrnnn!

Add insult to it we then moved to hanging knee to chest while wearing ruck. 😂. Yes, it’s intentional. The suffering that is.

Then as a happy go lucky sweaty, out of breath group we tucked the half mile back to the box where we just plopped down and warmed down. More like laid on the floor and called it stretching.

Hope you’ll join us soon.

We meet and warm up at CF Spero

Recycled flooring, not recycled breathing

I don’t know about you, but 31F feels good with just a wool shirt and a sandbag. Especially when your lugging it around for 300m, then performing 3 rounds of man-makers, shoulder to shoulder and finishing off with leg levers while holding said bag.

We ended up doing our WOD in a kids lot adjacent to the Barrie Park field, and man what a nice feeling cork ( I believe the material is) felt. However I think it’s recycled tires.

Man-makers are anaerobic system builders. When you think you’re good to go for an exercise and then you realize your second gear switched on on the first set, and you try not puking on the third set you know deep down that it is something that needs more work.

Humbled once again by a simple exercise routine, and a sandbag. This year is going to be fun, and I’d like to share this fun with you all. So, let’s get signed up.

See you soon!

Never too cold to run

As I say this, the thermostat is at 30F, and balmy. Some people still consider it shorts weather. I used to be in that category when I was *cough younger *cough, but I see the light and wear the appropriate three layers to stave off the chill.

Layer one, hair. Layer two, wool. Layer three, shell. See, I am a veteran athlete that doesn’t shy away from the cold, but my digits don’t like it since I had a few episodes of frost nip in my twenties. Fingers get pretty cold, and only moving fast will I be able to stay warm and retain warmth. Heck, my water bottle froze during a 5k while in my late 30’s and I wasn’t the worst for wear.

Since it’s balmy outside let’s get this workout done, no!? Today we’re at the Hill in Westchester Woods, Westchester, IL.

This week is gonna be dark, and cold so please dress appropriately. On very cold days I’ve worn various amounts (layers) of clothing, and brand names. A few brands I really trust due in part to fit, comfort, warmth, and its ability to maintain heat.

Icebreaker’s flexi chute – This little gem has a dual purpose. Keeps my nugget warm, and dry. Also works as a neck gatter when you’re wearing a dedicated hat, or use it as a hand warmer also. Trust me I’ve ran the gamut with item!

Icebreaker’s LS zip top – I’ve worn it for cold freezing morning WOD’s and it’s stellar. Warm enough under a fleece and windbreaker, or under just a windbreaker. Dries fairly quick, long enough sleeves with thumb hole to keep it from bunching up and useful as a nose wipe (really good wipe)😜

Icebreaker’s Ultra Sport Light Mini sock – This sock is cushy, warm and wool! I mean what else can you ask for? This sock I’ve used on cold days, hot days, wet days…… it just works!

2XU Thermal Accelerate Comp Tights – I’ve used three other brand name tight/ leggings for running, hiking, working out in the outdoors that have not met the prerequisites of maintaining heat, quick drying, wind proofing without an added shell. These fit the bill for me. I can wear another layer atop it and it’s incredible how it makes me feel even near zero temps! Toasty, compressed, and dry!

Mechanix The Original Grip Glove – Wearable equipment all year long! Grip to last you a while even when wet. Also, good while using a touch screen (surprising added benefit)

Altra Superior 3.5 – Started wearing these shoes on a recommendation by Selene, she wears the Lone Peak 3.5. Great traction, wide toe box, and zero drop. I’ve run, and rucked in them without a problem. They’re very breathable, but you’ll need to try them on yourself for the proper size. I found them a tad short, so I had to go up a half size.

With this much info you’re prepared for this week, and we’re kicking it off today @Mayfair Park, Westchester, IL
